We’re feeling a bit nostalgic about this one folks, this is actually where it all began for us back in October 2019!

That was the day that Mark and I decided we felt confident enough to start our own little golf tour for juniors to develop and the day that Highlander Junior Tour became a reality, the only problem we had was we had nowhere to play our first competition, and that’s where Continental Country Club comes in! From memory I think we had 7 players competing, it all seems like a long time ago now!

Things have advanced a little since then as our venue rota has changed quite a bit but when Mark recently played there and spoke about how well it is looking it didn’t take too much for us to decide it would be a fun day for everyone to head on back there! We hope as many of you as possible can make our return visit a special one!

The following is from Continental Country Club website:

Carved out of a natural Florida landscape, with fairways lined by majestic oak trees, lies the Continental Country Club championship golf course. Opened in 1972, Continental Country Club was the first golf course designed by renowned golf course architect Ron Garl. Some of Ron Garl’s other popular designs include the Magnolia, Palm and Lake Buena Vista courses at Walt Disney World. The championship layout is well known among many of today’s touring professionals who played it early in their careers on Florida mini tours. Continental continues to be one of the most popular stops for the North Florida PGA and Florida Professional mini tours. More about CCC by clicking HERE

Once in a while in golf something truly unique comes along to surprise you, a new discovery, a new experience?

Early in 2021 and we recently had the opportunity to visit Ocala Golf Club for the first time. We were seriously impressed by its layout, its condition and its history…the latter is something I didn’t think we had a great deal of when it comes to golf venues in Florida. I’m starting to believe that’s NOT the case anymore, we DO have some great historic courses it’s just that we have to do a little bit of digging to find them! How would you like to join us and play a 90 year old gem that really has stood the test of time?

To those golfers who know this one well, and who have talked about it for years, they know it simply as “Muni!” …it is city owned but that’s where the term ends for me as its unlike any municipal course I’ve ever seen before!  The layout is great and it could easily pass for a private course. It’s become known as one of the best competition venues in Florida and its visited every year by numerous Tours including FJT, and now HJT has begun a new relationship with “Muni”…we know you are going to enjoy playing and visiting this historic golfing landmark with us!

History

The Ocala Golf Club is located in the City of Ocala in Marion County. The city of Ocala has a long history and strong ties with the development of golf in Florida, dating back to the early 20th century. Ocala had a 9-hole golf course in the early 1900s known as the Ocala Heights Golf Club.  The early popularity of golf in Ocala generated citizen support for the development of a second golf course on the east side of town. Construction began in 1930 for a course designed and built under the personal supervision of E. Ellsworth Giles, golf architect from Pittsburgh. Giles promoted himself not only as an architect but as a builder of golf courses and an authority in selecting land for golf links. The Ocala Highlands Golf Course and Hotel formally opened in 1931. The City of Ocala purchased the golf course in the mid-1940s and built a new clubhouse.

In 2009, the municipal golf course re-opened for play following an extensive renovation by golf course architect Michael Beebe. The renovation consisted of new greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, cart paths and selective tree removal. According to Beebe, “our goal was to re-capture the classical look and strategic principles that had been lost over the years while utilizing improved technologies in turf grass, green construction, drainage and irrigation.” The club also re-introduced short grass around the greens to add interest to the short game.
