It was a return to Harbor Hills last weekend for the Highlander Junior Tour and in conjunction with our 18 hole event we had another opportunity to put our competing Wee Highlanders through their paces.

To recap, Wee Highlanders are our youngest group of developing golfers (aged 8 and under) who play holes 1-6 from tee boxes we have laid out on the course and from yardages that are suitable for their age/ability. Greens are normal full size and we play Stroke play golf with a maximum recorded on each hole of 8 strokes.

We believe that this style of golf (fun with a bit of a competition element) is a good way for young golfers to gain valuable course experience and become familiar with the expected behavior and etiquette of golf. At some stage we hope that each of these Wee Highlanders will step up to play in both 9 hole events and eventually join our other HJT players in 18 hole competitions.

For now though we stress to each of them that it’s about having FUN! We know golf can be tough on all who play the game but we also know and can draw on numerous examples that positively confirm all the reasons why we SHOULD be introducing them to the game as early as they start showing an interest and being able to hit a ball using a golf club.

On Saturday we welcomed three Wee Highlanders to Harbor Hills Country Club to take up our latest fun challenge. Kenzi Kacanich aged 7 (The Villages Junior Golf Academy) Koen Huther aged 5 (Eustis,Fl) and Om Khirbat aged 8 (Leesburg,Fl)

All three of our youngsters are accompanied by, on this occasion, a “caddy-daddy” to help with a little support and coaching and, as always, we had a good showing of parents and spectators along to support our players.

Its worth pointing out at this stage that we are always thankful for the support from the sidelines especially as it is given by all in the most sporting manner, despite the fact most in attendance are of course primarily there to support their own, practically every shot made by every player gets a cheer or applause from the spectators…. in fact that’s one of the things we genuinely LOVE about these competitions. And just think of the strong message that sends out to these kids as they play…golf is a game of great sportsmanship and fair play.

All 3 of our “Wees” have played with us before and know just what to expect of the day itself. A short briefing on local rules and each of our players began their day with a drive from the Wee Red tees.

As you may expect all of our players (Wee Highlander AND in our regular HJT events)  are all at different stages of development in their golf game right now and while we do complete scorecards, in order to present a medal, its really NOT that important at this stage and more about giving these players an opportunity to experience the course and have some fun playing together.

Koen had a new shaft fitted to his driver recently and even added a little to the length of it…a scary prospect for most but not for this 5 year old. He swings it with confidence and it seldom strays from the fairway. Kenzi has a height and power advantage and a long graceful swing which serves her really well with fine distance from the tee and again its unusual if its ever anything but long and straight. Om is working really hard right now with both his regular coach, and then with dad,  and there is no question he is already improving his all round game.

Its always fun to watch how these kids approach the art and skill involved in putting. We see everything in these matches from the player who takes a bit of time to study what lies ahead to the player who can’t get it in the hole quick enough, either way the important thing is they are learning how to play the game and when they play together we know they are more likely to pay attention to what others do and if its necessary, copy what they do if it helps them get better.

A long putt for Koen.
Om in full swing.

Approach shots into the greens and putting are what make Koen and Kenzi stand out at this stage. These shots are what help them both score low and they showed their usual fine form in those areas. In Kenzi’s case that was to be the part of the game that worked best for her and ultimately gave her the opportunity to grab another winners medal taking the prize by just 3 strokes from Koen.

Well done to all of our competitors for giving it your best. Om played some very good shots and scored his best round of golf so far with us, and that’s an improvement to be very proud of! Koen (complete with new driver) is becoming a really tough competitor and is following really well, in big brother Ryker’s very succesful golfing footsteps, and Kenzi just looks to be getting stronger and better each time we see her play.

We hope all of our players and everyone who came along enjoyed the Harbor Hills experience ? We certainly did.

Congratulations Kenzi for working hard to get the win and another Wee Highlander medal to add to your collection.

Congratulations Kenzi..good job!

Wee Highlanders are back next week as we return to Eagle Ridge GC in Summerfield. We hope to see you there if you can make it. More details on this one can be found by clicking HERE

Latest report and results from Harbor Hills Country Club Wee Highlander on Saturday June 20th 2020:

It was another successful outing for our Wee Highlander players at Harbor Hills as we once again took to the tee to watch our youngest golfers compete in a fun specially adapted 6 hole competition aimed at helping them develop their game while having the opportunity to experience great venues and have fun!

This time we were watching two players who are already clearly showing their parents that golf is going to be a sport they want to play and enjoy. Each are working hard to create a swing that will work for them and the signs for both of these kids is that they are on the right track, we may indeed still have the odd nervous “fresh air” miss but these are reducing and every so often each will hit that shot that tells everyone these young players have got what it takes to succeed in golf. Remember this fact as it applies to us all…golf is far from EASY! Starting so young will help these youngsters enormously as they get older and develop both body and mind

Preston Shearer aged 7 and Om Khirbat aged 8 certainly had fun and THAT is an absolute  requirement of competing in our Wee Highlander events.

We witnessed every aspect of the game in this 6 hole spell…driving, chipping and putting were all approached with a level of concentration that you have to see to believe…just as important every shot played, good or not so good, was followed by cheers of encouragement from parents, players and spectators! This is golf as it should be where we learn to display empathy for others, decency in behavior and fair play.

Both players had great moments to remember. As the final putt fell our two young players removed hats and shook hands.

Back at the clubhouse and time to collect the scorecards. It was indeed a close match…only 6 strokes separated the pair and both players bettered their previous Wee Highlander competition scores. On this occasion it was Preston who took the medal home with a very impressive 37 with Om recording his final score of 43.

We love to watch these kids play. They have FUN despite the fact that they understand golf by its very nature requires them to pay attention and remember what must feel like a whole bunch of stuff even before you hit the golf ball…regardless of that they keep smiling through and the hardest part for us is getting them to finish up when you know they would happily carry on and play 9 or even 18 holes !

For now though we want them to just keep doing what they are doing.

Well done Preston and Om…you did great and we do hope you had a lot of fun. Well done too to all the parents for helping keep things moving along.

We look forward to doing it again soon and will keep everyone updated on the next Wee Highlander Event.

Preston enjoying the support of his younger brother.

Results and report from Wee Highlanders at Red Tail GC on Saturday May 30th 2020

Another great day watching our Wee Highlanders compete at the wonderful, but super tough and challenging for all Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento,Florida.

Yesterday we welcomed two returning players. Previous winner Koen Huther aged 5 and also making his second Wee Highlander appearance Nathan Mehrlich aged 5 (and a half!) Koen and Nathan were joined on the tee by 7 year old Preston Shearer to make up our 3 player challenge match over 6 holes of stroke play golf.

Nathan…ready to play !
Ok Preston…Pick a spot, aim and hit!

We have mentioned before that the future of this great game for life is safe in these small hands and this was the case yet again yesterday as the fun began on tee number 1. Once again these youngest of players attracted a big following support and rightly so. Caddie Dads were on hand to help line up shots and read tricky putts and some great golf was on show from every player…and a few loose shots too BUT that’s why we are here right ? To learn, to have fun and to instill good habits and confidence in these young potential future Tour Players, the kind of confidence that allows them to casually shrug off the bad shots and move onto the hopefully next …good shots!

Koen, Preston and Nathan took on Red Tail. They happily skipped to their next shot, listened intently to their caddies and put everything into each stroke they played…the Florida sun shone hot and bright and while most of the assembled crowd prayed for a breeze our players were interested only in good solid drives and putts that dropped into the cup!

The following crowd of interested spectators cheered and applauded EVERY shot our Wee Highlanders struck and every putt that was played, is there any other sport in the world where that happens ? That level of support and encouragement given generously towards ALL players and not just your chosen favorite helps these kids realise golf is a sport that requires respect be given to our fellow players . Without even knowing it they are already learning some of the great life lessons golf can teach us while having fun with friends!

Six holes under our belts and it was back to the clubhouse to count the scores and present the winners medal.

The results were every bit as impressive as the performances. Is there room for improvement? Yes….Absolutely…golf is a sport that no player in history has ever truly mastered… Not Jones, Nicklaus or Woods. With a love for the game and a desire to succeed who knows how far each of these talented youngsters can go…one thing is for sure though, the earlier they start playing the more time they have to be the best they can be!

Well done to all of our players..good job, you did great and thank you to our supporters too for your exceptional encouragement of them all.

Hit it over there…hard !
Everyone needs a little advice from their caddie.

The following scores were recorded:

1.Koen Huther 33

2.Preston Shearer 38

3.Nathan Mehrlich 46

Once again Koen Huther took the winners medal to take his tally to 2 in total. Congratulations to Koen from us all.

So that wrapped up another Wee Highlander event. We are loving the opportunity to host these events and we will advise of the venue and date of the next one.

A special thank you goes out to Dan Huther…Dan we really do appreciate all your help with our Wee Highlanders thank you !

We value your support and feedback and we will try to keep these events fun and interesting with new ideas etc. as we go forward. As parents or if you are just interested in kids golf development please feel free to send us any ideas or thoughts you may have on these events. Hopefully it also goes without saying that we need your support to make these events happen so please tell everyone you know who has a budding golfer at home aged 8 and under about The Wee Highlanders, and if they are older than that tell them about the next step up and our Highlander Junior Tour for all those 10-17’s.

See you next time everyone.

              **The Wee Highlanders Tour **

We can’t recall how many times we have been told by leading figures in sports and industry experts that its great to get kids playing golf from an early age…and we certainly agree! The question often asked is just how old should they be when as parents we take them on their first proper journey into the game we hope they will play for the whole of their lifetime!

The answer to that question is there is NO set or defined age on when’s right for your youngster to begin ..most golf professionals we know will have their own ideas on this and of course everyone else has an opinion, ultimately though its down to you as a parent to call that one! Some professionals will say aged 6 is a good start point but honestly if your kid is a bit younger than that and shows enough interest then get a club in their hand and start working on knocking some balls around the yard at home.

First proper steps will probably involve purchasing some kids golf equipment, there’s no shortage of that out there but do seek advice from the professionals where possible (we don’t sell kids golf gear but we can help answer questions if you have them on what’s best to buy and what should be avoided!) A course of junior lessons will help move things along too but again, seek advice and recommendations as not all teaching golf professionals have the desire and indeed the patience required to get the best out of these wee ones…again we can help, just ask!

As many of you may know we already operate Highlander Junior Tour and we are experienced in providing regular competition events for junior players in Florida. Our competitions are all 18 hole stroke play and our roster of players ranges in age from 8 to 18 with the average age overall probably around 12. While we don’t discourage younger players from playing in these events if they choose to it is certainly not ideal for their development and enjoyment of the game if for example we are expecting a group of 6 year old’s to play and keep pace with significantly older kids over 18 holes of stroke play golf!

So what’s the alternative ? What can we provide to these younger golfers, perhaps new to the game and who want to play and develop their skills on a proper “grown up” golf course with similar age/ability friends and other like minded young golfers? How do we bridge that gap NOW?

**Welcome to the Wee Highlanders Tour**

Meet Callum…our Wee Highlander, Proud and Strong.

We are really excited to be adding the Wee Highlanders Tour to our schedule of events.

Each of our Wee Highlanders events will be tailored to our youngest golfers to ensure they can enjoy a fun competitive match perfectly suited to their age and ability. Each event will be played over 6 holes with junior course yardages in place and each competition winner will be presented with an exclusive Highlanders medal.

We anticipate that these events will become very popular and enjoyable for all participants. From a development perspective we believe we can help provide that stepping stone to integrating these youngest players into playing competitive junior golf on The Highlander Junior Tour as they advance in age and become more confident and more competent golfers.

We hope to see you at a Wee Highlander Event soon. Watch this website and click on upcoming events HERE
