On a cold November morning back in 2015 long time Florida PGA teaching Professional Mark Panigoni arrived at the birthplace of golf (St. Andrews in Scotland) hoping to fulfill a long-anticipated dream, a once in a lifetime opportunity to play The Old Course.(The Swilken Bridge on The Old Course is pictured above)
As a golf historian and fellow lover of the game, Keith McColl was the Custodian of The Old Course when Mark arrived. Having welcomed countless golfing guests onto the first tee of the worlds most famous golf venue for many years Keith knew only too well what playing the worlds most famous golf course at The Home of the Game would mean to Mark.
After a lengthy wait and some prayers Mark finally stepped onto the hallowed ground that is the 1st tee of “The Old”
On that day and in the most special of places a great friendship was born between two families and two extremely like-minded lovers of the game. Four years later, The McColls have left Scotland behind and are now living in The Villages, Florida, close to their great friends The Panigoni’s.
After working together for the first time coaching The Villages Charter High School Boys Golf Team through a mainly successful 2019 season, Keith and Mark both share the view that to continue developing junior golfers in Florida, more opportunities to play competitive golf must be made available to them on a year-round basis, allowing them to continue to play regularly and within a competitive but fun framework.
In November 2019 Keith and Mark launched The Highlander Junior Golf Tour. Their aim is simple, to keep kids interested in self-improvement and playing golf for life. This process is already underway and they are now hosting regular, competitive junior golf matches, at an affordable price and at great local venues not too far from home.
We hope you will support our endeavors and consider bringing your Junior golfer to our next event.
Mark has been a member of the PGA of America since 2005 and has been teaching golf in Central Florida since 2006. His list of clients includes four recent District champions, 2 junior world qualifiers, 2 collegiate golfers and several professional golfers. In 2018, Mark was nominated for the Youth Player Development Award and in 2019, was honored to be asked to lead The Villages High School Boys’ Golf team. Mark knows the key to keeping juniors involved in the game is competitive play and that’s why he is excited to partner with Keith to start the Highlander Junior Tour.
A proud Scot who has worked extensively within the golf business in St. Andrews, Scotland for many years. Much of that time was spent on and around the famous Old Course. He is an experienced team leader and supervisor who believes passionately that golf is way more than just a game. Golf is a game for life that teaches us from an early age, lessons that make us better adults. By playing competitively we learn about honesty, integrity and respect for others. Keith is also a golf historian who is just as likely to be seen on the golf course with a set of early 1900’s hickory clubs as he is with his modern-day Mizuno’s!
